The global refugee crisis has reached unprecedented levels, with millions displaced due to conflict, persecution,
and violence. Uganda is at the forefront of this crisis, hosting approximately 1.8 million refugees, mainly from
South Sudan (54%), the Democratic Republic of Congo (32%), and Sudan. The country’s open-door policy has
facilitated the integration of refugees into society by granting them access to land, public services, and basic
rights, promoting dignity and well-being.
This policy has enabled refugees to access education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, and has
been widely praised for its generosity and commitment to protecting refugee rights. However, the influx of
refugees poses significant challenges to Uganda’s resources and infrastructure, straining public services and
local economies. With over 60,000 new arrivals between January and mid-June 2025, mostly women and
children, the country faces an enormous burden.
