Filling the Gap or Taking the Lead?
Uganda hosts Africa’s largest refugee population, renowned for progressive policies. The key to sustainable solutions lies with refugee-led organizations (RLOs) and local humanitarians supporting displaced communities. This documentary "Filling the Gap or Taking the Lead?" by the Refugee Law Project (RLP), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and Makerere University’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS) highlights the resilience and creativity of refugees and host communities in Bidibidi settlement. RLOs, through initiatives like collective farming (Oya practices) and savings groups (Rabita), provide essential support and foster emotional resilience via community activities like sports. However, they encounter challenges such as complex registration and limited funding access, restricting their potential. This documentary also promotes the global localization agenda, advocating for flexible funding, fair partnerships, and culturally aware accountability to empower RLOs in leading humanitarian aid transformation.
